HOW TO EQUIP FOR EXCELLENCE SERIES SET GOALS FOR GROWTH Part 2 When you as a leader help your people set goals, it would be beneficial to use the following guide: MAKE THE GOAL APPROPRIATE Always keep in mind the job you want the people to do and the desired result: the development of your people into effective leaders. Identify goals that will contribute to that corporate or larger goal. MAKE THE GOAL ATTAINABLE Nothing will make people want to quit faster than facing unachievable goals. It always better to begin with goals that can be easily achieved, and then work it up with time. Setting goals that your people cannot accept would always backfire. MAKE THE GOALS MEASURABLE Your aspiring leaders may never know when that have achieved their goals if they aren't measurable. Being able to measure would always give a sense of accomplishment to such aspiring leaders. It also enables them to set new goals in place of the old ones. CLEARLY STATE THE GOALS When goals have no clear focus, neither will the action of the people trying to implement them. Write down the vision and make it plain upon tables, that he may pursue that reads it. Habakkuk 2:1-3 MAKE THE GOALS REQUIRE A "STRETCH" Even though goals have to be achievable, it is also required that it stretches us. The leader must have an understanding of his people well enough to identify attainable goals that require a stretch. PUT THE GOALS IN WRITING When people write down their goals, it makes them more accountable for those goals. Putting goals in writing works.
